Women's day special - Music Video

March 07, 2015 by Soumya Radhakrishnan

Hariyo is a Kannada original single that talks about the different roles women play in our lives. Even though the lyrics have a regional influence, the video has a global flair to it. Also, as a part of Paint it Purple campaign, I have included a tint of purple in the cover art for the song.

Wishing a great women's day to all the beautiful women out there. Stay blessed and inspire on.

Moving out of my comfort shell

February 28, 2015 by Soumya Radhakrishnan

There comes a point in our lives when we become too comfortable with what we’ve been doing. It’s possible to break this monotony by finding and introducing something else in our life that brings back the old challenge when you did the thing that caused boredom in the first place.
I’ve always been a vocalist of Indian Classical style. A few weeks ago, I realized that I’ve been feeling too comfortable with being just a vocalist. It took me more than two decades of hard work, rigorous practice and numerous rejections to feel extremely comfortable in what I've been good at. But, lately, I've started to lose that spark in me. So, I decided to introduce something else to my existing musical portfolio, that is, to arrange music for my songs.
Currently, I’m taking baby steps in music arrangement by slowly implementing layers of an instrument at a time. In this era of midi music and music loops, this is just a natural and a logical next step to singing. I will be doing covers, initially, and once I get a grip on the process, I'm planning to do a few originals as well.
Meanwhile, do listen to this track for which I did a simple acoustic arrangement.

Thinking outside the box, musically

February 21, 2015 by Soumya Radhakrishnan

When I was in grad school, academic research and essays occupied most of the curriculum. Terminologies such as coursework, critical analysis, out-of-the-box thinking, and Harvard referencing system were the norm for all of us at the B-School. Little did I know then that the very same terms will also, be applicable to a student of classical music.
After my B-School experience, I started to integrate these skills while listening to and learning Carnatic music. Apparently, it is one of the right ways to enjoy and learn this art form. I shall be sharing my findings as and when I discover something out of this whole process. Here are some resources to get you started on listening classical music critically. Let me know if you find anything interesting.

Identifying a passion for music

February 07, 2015 by Soumya Radhakrishnan

Cultivating a passion for something is different from having a passion. I would like to write about the latter in this blog post.
To identify if we have a passion for music, the question we should be asking is 'what is it that I can give or contribute to music' and not 'what is it that I can get from music'.
The answer to this question led to the birth of this blog.
Which question are you asking yourself?
